Kyrene Middle School GATE Preparatory Cohort Program
Program Description
The Kyrene Middle School GATE Preparatory Cohort Program is an accelerated program in 6th through 8th grades. This program provides a positive, challenging educational experience commensurate with student ability. These motivated learners experience mathematics and the sciences through exploration and application, and participate in a rigorous language & literature class where they examine challenging literary texts, study advanced grammar, learn Greek and Latin roots and affixes, and write in a variety of formats. They also approach individuals & societies (i.e., social studies) through increased rigor and analysis and our advanced math program incorporates the vital link between application and rigor.
College and Career Readiness Standards are taught through engaging lessons that allow students to test hypotheses, solve real world problems and develop strong communication skills that will help them be successful in the future.
Mission Statement
The KMS GATE Preparatory Cohort is committed to fostering the academic, social and emotional development of our students through an inquiry-based learning approach. Students engage in learning that provides opportunities for critical thinking through questioning, observing and reflecting to develop new understandings of the world around them.
In alignment with the Kyrene District GATE Program, GATE coursework is available in all four core areas (Language & Literature, Sciences, Individuals & Societies, and Mathematics) and there are opportunities for High School credit in mathematics. GATE courses are taught by a content specialist in the area of study who have received specialized training to address the needs of gifted learners. GATE courses are designed to meet the needs of gifted learners in four domains: challenge, complexity, choice and control. Specially trained, caring teachers understand differentiation and provide social emotional supports. GATE teachers will employ advanced instructional strategies, higher depth of knowledge, differentiation in product and process, and flexible grouping as well as interest surveys, independent projects, and learning menus.
